NUST holds Seminar on Plastic Waste and its Recycling

NUST Office of Sustainability  and SCME, in collaboration with Pak Science Foundation, UNESCO, UNDP, Coca Cola , and Global Water Organization, organized a seminar on recycling of plastic waste on 3rd Nov, 2021, at SCME Seminar Hall, NUST H12 Campus. The event was graced by Federal Secretary Dr. Akhtar Nazir, Ministry of Science and Technology, as Chief Guest and by Pro-Rector RIC Dr. Rizwan Riaz. The members of the panel discussion included H.E Ms. Patricia McPhillips, Country Director UNESCO, Country Director Mr. Aman Ullah, Director UNDP Pakistan, Ms. Ayesha Sarwari, Director Public Affairs and Sustainability Coca Cola Pakistan and Prof. Dr. Shahid Baig, S.I., Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF).

Dr. Rizwan Riaz highlighted the efforts of NUST Office of Sustainability as an institutional platform for effective collaboration with national, regional, and international stakeholders on sustainability initiatives.

During the panel discussion, H.E Ms. Patricia McPhillips, spoke on the importance of plastic waste management and highlighted the environmental challenges faced due to mass cutting of trees. Country Director Mr. Aman Ullah, highlighted the efforts of UNDP in lowering the environmental pollution caused due to excessive use of plastic and called it a national responsibility in controlling the use and appropriate dumping for recycling. Ms. Ayesha Sarwari, discussed the initiatives of Coca-Cola in recycling the plastic through building plastic roads across Islamabad and placing recycle-bins on tourist sites to preserve mother nature. Prof. Dr. Shahid Baig in his closing remarks appreciated the initiatives of panel members and mentioned that a collective effort could put an end to environmental pollution to make world a sustainable place to live in.
