In August 2023, Pakistan witnessed a historic moment as NUST hosted the first-ever Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) in the country. This groundbreaking event marked the commencement of a nationwide movement making LCOY Pakistan 2023 more than just another gathering. It was a pivotal moment for the nation’s youth in their quest to address climate change on a grand scale. The conference provided a platform for Pakistan’s young generation to exert their influence on climate policies, both at the national and international levels. The impact of LCOY Pakistan 2023 was felt across the nation, attracting participants from every province and region. To maintain an equitable representation, there was an equal ratio of female to male participants. This inclusivity was reflected in an array of breakout sessions, plenary discussions, and side events that explored themes like energy transition, climate finance for adaptation projects and community-based climate action.

Notably, the pivotal role of youth in advocating for climate justice and local climate initiatives took a center stage. The side events added depth to the experience, incorporating crisis simulations, climate communication, mental wellbeing, and skill-based learning. Key partners such as Islamic Relief, German Red Cross, GIZ, and Pak Mission Society extended their support to LCOY Pakistan 2023, leaving an indelible mark on the event. At its core, this conference facilitated a policy document that reflected the hopes and demands of Pakistani youth regarding their nation’s energy future, climate finance, and community-based climate initiatives.

This youth-led movement is not just a beacon of hope for Pakistan but a guiding light for a world grappling with the urgent challenges of climate change. Beyond the development of skills and knowledge, the central outcome of this gathering was the formulation of a comprehensive policy document that outlines climate-related demands addressed to the world leaders. This document stands as a powerful tool, that empowers young Pakistanis and gives them a platform to voice their concerns and aspirations at influential global events such as COY18 and COP28, in collaboration with YOUNGO and UNFCCC.

The next crucial phase for this conference intends on focusing on the extent to which these changes are effectively implemented in practice. While this event has set an essential path in translating the aspirations and demands of the Pakistani youth into actionable steps, the real measure of its impact will be determined by tangible climate action that will follow. Therefore, this conference represents the beginning of a long battle for the future of Pakistan and the broader global fight against climate change.
