COP27 at NUST: Youth Engagement and Panel Discussion held at UPSCASE, NUST

An event titled “COP27 at NUST” was organized by the Research Directorate, Office of Sustainability, in collaboration with German Red Cross (GRC) and Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) on the 21st of December, 2022. The event features a wide audience from various universities including International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), Institute of Space Technology (IST), and National University of Modern Languages (NUML).

Students from the Environment Club and Green Youth Movement of NUST played an active role in organizing the event along with the Office of Sustainability. The event was held to sum up the outcomes of the 27th Conference of Parties (COP27) held earlier in November 2022 at Egypt Sharm el Sheikh. The invited panelists were youth delegates at COP27 and gave valuable insights into the process and results of the conference.

The event began with an activity designed to develop solution-oriented mindsets in terms of Climate Action. A brief problem statement pertaining to the Loss and Damage Fund was provided to the audience along with instructions to solve it. The audience was divided into 12 teams of 5 to 8 people and was given 15 minutes to come up with solutions. Each team then presented their solutions at the podium and the best solution was voted upon.

The second segment of the event included a panel discussion, moderated by Anam Rathor, Climate Finance Advisor at GIZ. The panelists included Hania Imran, Rida Rashid, Zainab Zahid, Pervez Ali, and Adnan Khan. The panel discussion provided a vibrant discussion on the opportunities and shortcomings of COP27, followed by a lucrative question and answer session.

The Head of Office of GRC Pakistan, Mr. Asif Aman Khan, gave a short talk about the working and projects of GRC. He also commended the youth and spoke about future collaboration with NUST. The event concluded with speech by Pro Rector RIC, Dr. Rizwan Riaz, on how the youth can make a positive impact on the world, particularly in terms of climate change and sustainability. After the shield awarding ceremony, the audience and guests had tea and refreshments along with a brief networking session.
